Input and output are how the computer exchanges information with the outside world.

A peripheral is an extra connected device that extends what the computer can do.


Input

Input is what goes into the system.

Examples:

  • keyboard presses
  • mouse movement
  • microphone audio
  • webcam video
  • touch input

Output

Output is what comes back out from the system.

Examples:

  • text on the screen
  • audio through speakers
  • printed pages
  • lights on a device

An output problem does not always mean the whole computer is broken. Sometimes the machine is working and only the output path is failing.


Peripherals and connected devices

Peripherals are often optional or add-on devices such as:

  • mouse
  • keyboard
  • printer
  • webcam
  • headset
  • external drive

These still matter because many real beginner problems start with a cable, port, power path, or missing driver.

Calm first question

When a device fails, ask first whether it is an input problem, an output problem, a connection problem, or a driver problem. That keeps the next step small and safe.
